This concert honors Billy Strayhorn, the gay African-American composer of such classics as "Take the A-Train," "Satin Doll," "Lush Life" and other tunes made famous by Duke Ellington. Lush Life, presented in collaboration with Jazz Orchestra Atlanta and in partnership with the National Black Arts Festival, features guest stars Donzaleigh Abernathy and John Wesley Wright and includes a free pre-concert lecture by Larry Strayhorn on the life and music of his late uncle.

Have been to and enjoyed many performances of the AGMC but Lush Life has been an exception. They were lacking their usual energy and charisma throughout what little parts of the show they actually got to perform. The production and flow of the show was also very rocky. At one point a serious monologue was followed by a completely disconnected campy dance routine. I sincerely hope this is not a harbinger of things to come with this great group.
