Perry first introduced Madea in his 1999 play I Can Do Bad All By Myself, and the character has made many appearances in his works since then. In Perry s description, Madea is a "God-fearing, gun-toting, pot-smoking, loud-mouthed grandmother" who takes life in hand in a no-nonsense manner.
