Aiken Lecture: Henry Wiencek, Master of the Mountain: Thomas Jefferson and His Slaves
Henry Wiencek’s eloquent, persuasive new book, based on new information from archaeological work at Monticello and on hitherto overlooked evidence in Jefferson’s personal papers, opens a huge, poorly understood dimension of Jefferson’s world. Jefferson is most often depicted as a paradoxical figure entangled in slavery; but Wiencek's research finds a man who embraced slavery in the 1790s; who urged investment in slaves; and who adapted, industrialized, modernized, and thereby enabled slavery.
