The Play of Herod is one of Atlanta's longest-running and most unusual Christmas traditions, sung in Latin, with English translations projected above the action. The audience is invited to stay for cookies and hot cider and carols with the cast after the performance.
The Play of Herod is one of a group of remarkable liturgical dramas, found in a Benedictine monastery in France, which are among the earliest dramatic works in the Christian era. The Christmas story unfolds in a medieval ceremony of simple gestures and ancient, haunting melodies. It is a tale of awestruck shepherds, kings from afar come to worship a baby, a King Herod clinging to power, the bloody slaughter of children. A consort of viols, recorders, krumm horn, hurdy-gurdy, and percussion accompanies the singers.
This production is not suited for babies or youngsters unable to sit quietly for an hour. Due to the nature of the play, there will be no late seating. Your cooperation will be rewarded with a magical evening!
