and this is not something I say flippantly. I’ve traveled all over the Southeast, and I make it a point to try as many local BBQ joints as I come across. Hometown Barbeque is literally the measuring stick by which I compare all other barbeque experiences.
First the food. The pulled pork and ribs are excellent. The pork comes free of gristle or fat but with the burnt ends intact – a rarity for most any BBQ joint. The ribs are always tender and pink to the bone. Each is infused with ample amount of smoke and spice. If it’s lighter fare you’re looking for, Hometown also offers low calorie (for BBQ) smoked chicken that rivals its pork offerings. Round out your meal with seasoned and battered potato wedges, coleslaw, baked beans, banana pudding, and a Coke for the complete experience. As for the sauce, Hometown offers two: a peppery tomato based “Original” and a tangy mustard/ vinegar “Carolina Red.” Make sure you try the meat before applying sauce, though. It’s flavorful enough without it.
Hometown is even kind enough to give you a few pointers for your own BBQ – as long as you promise not to open up your own BBQ place across the street, that is. If you’re the type that likes to play around on the grill in the backyard, they have sauce, dry rub, and marinade ready to help you out.
Their service is exceptional. Every time I go in there I’m greeted with warm smiles and friendly “hellos.” After ordering, don’t be surprised if you meal arrives at your table before you do. The close quarters of the converted frontier-style house give the restaurant a cozy, charming character. If you walk in the door, make sure to spend a few moments chatting with either George or Martha, the two owners. They are always there, and the quality of their food shows it. Everything is made with the type of care you would expect from a “Hometown” operation.
The only things that keep me from giving Hometown the full 5 stars are their hours and the fact that they don’t accept credit cards. You might want to call ahead before heading over there, as even I have trouble remembering their hours. Also, if you don’t have any cash on you they do have an ATM on site for you. Still, the bottom line is that this place is the best BBQ in the county. If you’re a fan of real barbecue, you have to try Hometown at least once in your life.

Partners George Richbourg and Martha Kelly sold their barbecue from the back of a catering truck until taking up in Lawrenceville. Pulled pork here is nothing to shake a stick at, but the real reason to come to Hometown is for the ribs, which are full, meaty and fall from the bone.
